| Abstract: | El norte de Honduras experimentó un alto impacto al sufrir el paso de los huracanes Eta e Iota durante un pico de COVID-19 en el año 2020. Se realizó encuestas de campo para evaluar las experiencias y percepciones de los pobladores de la ciudad de San Pedro Sula, como parte del proyecto “Centro de Datos de Observaciones de la Tierra” de la UNITEC. Se usó ArcGIS Survey y PowerBI para procesar y visualizar las respuestas de 1,428 encuestados (ver Cortés Data Hub). Los principales impactos fueron pérdida de empleo, muerte de familiares, migración, daños a viviendas y cierre de empresas. El 48% de encuestados reportó la intención de iniciar algún emprendimiento, especialmente relacionados a apertura de tiendas de varios tipos, venta de insumos, tecnología y servicios de varios tipos. El 22% de los entrevistados manifestó la intención de emigrar. El proveer opciones para emprendimientos exitosos, es una urgencia por parte del estado y del sector privado. Las instituciones académicas también deben innovar para responder a estas necesidades de la población y mitigar el impacto de eventos naturales y sanitarios. |
| Description: | Northern Honduras experienced a high impact from hurricanes Eta and Iota during a peak of COVID-19 in 2020. Field surveys were conducted to assess the experiences and perceptions of the residents of the city of San Pedro Sula, as part of UNITEC's "Earth Observations Data Center" project. ArcGIS Survey and PowerBI were used to process and visualize responses from 1,428 respondents (see Cortés Data Hub). The main impacts were loss of employment, death of family members, migration, damage to homes and closure of businesses. 48% of those surveyed reported the intention of starting a business, especially related to the opening of various types of stores, the sale of supplies, technology and various types of services. 22% of those interviewed expressed their intention to emigrate. The supply of options for successful enterprises is an urgency on the part of the state and the private sector. Academic institutions must also innovate to respond to these population needs and mitigate the impact of natural and health events. |
