Abstract: The vehicle routing is a key factor in the configuration of a supply chain network, especially for the distribution of products that are manufactured and / or stored in the distribution centers of companies. Modeling using mixed integer mathematical programming is considered within the group of the exact methods and contributes significantly to the optimal solution of the problem. However, when firms must distribute their products to a significant number of customers daily, mathematical programming models become impractical because of the large number of input parameters that must be included and the large number of output variables that are generated in the model. The objective of this work is to show a prototype methodology of model generation developed to obtain an optimal solution of the vehicle routing following a three steps procedure: Clustering, Routing, and Partitioning. For optimization, a two-phase mathematical modeling, solved by means of mixed integer mathematical programming, was used, as a variant of the solution method of the VRP and MDVRP problem. A company that must deliver a specified quantity of goods daily to 40 clients was considered. These clients must be grouped around four locations. Each group in turn must be visited by a fleet of vehicles in a sequence that produces the lowest possible cost. Data from the distribution database, as well as the geographic information system (GIS), were used to generate the models.
